Is this a great time for photography?

Mike Johnston at The Online Photographer has a penchant for asking really good questions, and yesterday he did it again in a post titled, Is this 'A Great Time for Photography'? He seems to be quoting an unnamed friend, who said that it is. Johnston isn't so sure.

He acknowledges that it's a great time for taking snapshots, and for sharing, and for our wallets (as digital photography is relatively cheap to begin with, compared to film photography). But "photography itself? Overall, as a whole? Hmm."

Classic understatement, that "Hmm."

My review of Olympus OM-D E-M1 up at Macworld

My review of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is up at Macworld. Actually, has been up now for two days.

Olympus E-M1: The Lightweight Heavyweight Champ

I hope the review speaks for itself pretty well. About that five mouse (A+) rating, I just want to say here that I calls 'em as I sees 'em. Always. To me, a five mouse rating simply means that the product is about as good as we realistically can expect it to be. It doesn't mean the product is perfect, or that it's all things to all people. The E-M1 isn't perfect, but no camera is. And it certainly isn't the right camera for everyone, as I point out in the later paragraphs of the review.

But if the E-M1 doesn't deserve five mice, then no camera does.
